my second novel
i am working on my second novel, i have been working on it for about a year but not very hard until now
i have some advice for people writing novels
here are some tao lin motivational quotes for novel-writing

some novels it is like you will read it if you're feeling really alone or just bored and it is similar to hanging out with someone, and being willing to hang out with someone, because you are alone or bored and they won't annoy you or make you feel worse

there are three main ways a book can get me to want to read it more than once, i think
it can start in one place and end in a different place that is unexpected and makes you forget where it began (i think this has happened with short stories, but not really entire books, for me), for example maybe 'graveyard day' by bobbie ann mason, that story where they smoke crack, i think, by a.m. homes, and that story by murakami where they rob a mcdonald's
those stories the plot is like intuitive and it doesn't think about what happened before, and it is like a poem with a lot of non-sequiturs, and it also doesn't care about using interesting language or having interesting ideas
that is rereadable
the other way is for a book to have interesting things in every line, like things that are funny, strange, or original, and i think examples of that are almost all of lorrie moore and 'the quick and the dead' by joy williams
that is even more rereadable to me than the first kind
the third way i'm not completely sure
i think it's if a book is labeled fiction but i'm almost completely sure everything in it really happened; an example of this to me would be 'the end of the story' by lydia davis
since it really happened i read it and try to use that information to learn about human beings
but i know if someone other than lydia davis wrote it i might not feel that way

You might not like it. I did, though. If you like it, you'll like it in an End of the Story way.
i think Eeeee Eee Eeee is like the first way. As soon as I finished it I started at the beginning again. It does end in a place that makes you forget where it began. I couldn't remember specific "plot" points from the beginning, I just remembered the feeling of it. It moves like a poem. I love that book.

yeah when you said about a book having interesting things in every line i thought immediately of "the quick and the dead", in fact i like that book best read one line and then wait an hour and read another sentence.
tao the second story in Bed is the best thing i've read by you since "poem by anonymous sweet tomatoes restaurant location" (which you said was copy pasted or whatever) and also that poem about the boy with knife feet.

If EEEEE EEE EEEE has elements of all three types (which I think it does), and if you agreed I was right (not saying you would), does that mean you would have to come up with a fourth kind of book you would want to read, or can you work it out as percentages?
the idea of a book that i would like to re-read is one that is like a list of the best sms messages or myspace comments that i have ever received. but obviously that is a metaphor. everything would have to link together properly, but you could just choose one sentence and it would make sense by itself without context. is that possible?
i like your three ideas of what makes a novel re-readable. they make sense and are easy to apply and understand. and they are true as well.

i got bored with the new lydia davis also, i liked the story with her and the professor walking aroudn though
i think she just doesn't write the same thing again, so is writing new things, even if they might be boring; maybe she values newness over interestingness or something, i can understand that

i think i tried to do the second way with BED though
maybe a fourth way is to have the story be in service of an 'epiphany' or moment of intense emotions at the last sentence, i tried to do that with BED also

i feel that a lot of text messages i get and things people say to me in emails or in gmail chats are much more interesting, funny, and insightful than things i read in books
